About IES

The Institute of Environmental Studies (IES) was established in mid-1992 to support and to help coordinate environmental activities at the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

IES provides multi-disciplinary teaching in sustainability and builds networks for consulting and research work in projects requiring technical and social or policy expertise. Areas of current activity for IES include State of the Environment reporting, the principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development, Risk and decision making and governance issues such as climate change policy. More information is available in the Research section.

Following initial campus-wide consultation, the University of New South Wales and its Council recognise the importance of environmental issues both nationally and internationally. The University Strategic Plan has supported the establishment of a UNSW Environmental Network (EN). In short, the EN aims to create a system whereby information can easily be gained / exchanged and provide opportunities for ideas to be discussed in a trans-disciplinary setting in the areas of research and teaching excellence, international development and community service. For more information, please contact the IES.

UNSW aims to develop innovative, transdisciplinary research programs in environmental studies, to provide world-class postgraduate research opportunities for MSc and PhD students, to provide excellent transdisciplinary teaching in environmental studies to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and to provide expert environmental services to Australian and Asian regions.

IES co-ordinates three Environmental Management programs for post-graduate students:

Graduate Certificate
Graduate Diploma
Master of Environmental Management

People from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds and career stages will find these programs useful. The aim is to provide flexible and practical programs which will develop, build or enhance your career. For further information and to read testimonials from graduates, please visit the Future Students section.

IES contributes to heightening general awareness on environmental issues through its newsletter Environs as well as through the organisation of conferences and public lectures. For more details, please visit the News & Events section. Please note that this site is constantly updated.
