Environment Groups and Organisations- Australian

  • Australian Association for Environmental Education - A professional association for environmental educators in Australia. They provide networking and information exchange between the environmental education community in Australia.
  • Australian Conservation Foundation - ACF is a national non-profit organisation. The site has details of current campaigns, and offers a forum for discussion, links and publication lists.
  • Environment Education Association
  • Environment Institute of Australia - The EIA is the professional association for environmental practitioners. The site contains details of membership, current environmental issues, an article index for the Australian Journal of Environmental Management and other items of interest to practitioners.
  • The Gondwana Centre - The Gondwana Centre is a unique, non-profit, ecological adult learning centre at Binna Burra in South East Queensland. Our mission is to create and host world-class, transformative adult learning programs that contribute to and extend the knowledge and application of ecological, sustainability, social justice and social change principles in Australia and the Asia Pacific.
  • Greenpeace Australia Pacific
  • National Toxics Network - Environment Advocates Homepage - National Toxics Network is a community-based organisation with the common aim of decreasing the chemical load on the environment and of promoting environmentally responsible technologies and management systems.
  • Nature Conservation Council of NSW - The Nature Conservation Council of NSW is the peak umbrella organisation for over 100 conservation and environment groups in NSW, Australia.
  • The Natural Step - The Natural Step works with organisations to develop sustainability, using a model which focuses on the systemic causes of environmental problems.
  • The Wilderness Society - The Wilderness Society is a national community-based advocacy organisation. The site has information on past and present campaigns, links to other activist groups and environment organisations.
  • Total Environment Centre- TEC - TEC was founded in 1972 as Australia's first environment centre. It is committted to genuine public participation in environmental decision-making and conducts research into environmental policies at the cutting edge.
  • WWF- World Wide Fund for Nature Australia - WWF is an independent, apolitical organisation which focuses on collaboration rather than confrontation to achieve its ends. It develops solutions by involving local communties, landholders and decision makers.

Teaching and Research Institutions - Australian

  • Australian Centre for Environmental Law (ACEL) ANU | Sydney - This Centre is a collaborative venture between the Law Faculties of the Australian National University, the University of Adelaide and the University of Sydney. ACEL promotes teaching and research in environmentlal law between the three universities and is estabilshing itself as a resource base in this field for Australia, Asia and the Pacific Region.
  • Centre for Biodiversity and Bioresources, Macquarie University, Australia - This centre is a Commonwealth key centre of teaching and research. Information at this site includes Biodiversity and Australia, Using Biodiversity Sustainably, and Conserving and Understanding Biodiversity. The site also has details of research and education programs.
  • Centre for Energy and Environmental Markets (CEEM) - The Centre for Energy and Environmental Markets (CEEM) at the University of New South Wales brings together researchers in UNSW and partner organisations with the key objective of providing Australian research leadership in the interdisciplinary design, analysis and performance monitoring of energy and environmental markets and their associated policy frameworks. CEEM undertakes research drawing on expertise from the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Commerce and Economics, the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Arts, the Australian Graduate School of Management, and the Institute of Environmental Studies.
  • Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies (CRES), Australian National University - CRES is an interdisciplinary research and postgraduate centre focussing on resource and environmertal issues at local, national and global scales.
  • Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) - This site includes research areas of agribusiness, environmental and natural resources, manufacturing, minerals and energy. Further searches will lead to more specific information, such as climate change scenarios for Australia.
  • Institute for Sustainable Futures, University of Technology, Sydney - ISF has four major programs: Sustainable Water and Waste Minimisation, Sustainable Transport and Urban Form, Sustainable Energy, and Sustainable Development in Local Government. ISF also works with organisations to facilitate sustainability, conducts applied research, workshops and short courses and sponsors public lectures and seminars.

Legal Sites - Australian

  • National Environmental Defender's Offices Network - Through this site you can access the EDO Network. The EDO Network consists of nine independently constituted and managed community environmental legal centres spread across Australia. Each EDO office is dedicated to protecting the environment in the public interest. The site has details of the various campaigns in which the EDO is involved around Australia
  • Law & Justice Foundation of NSW - This site contains a set of relevant Commonwealth and NSW legislation and other internet-based resources dealing with environment, planning and local government. It has information on Land and Environment Court (NSW) cases, and links to environment agencies.
  • AustLII: Australian Legal Information Institute - Database used to search for cases and legislation.

Environment Agencies and Organisations - International

  • Biodiversity Conservation Network - The BCN evaluates issues of business, the environment and local communities. It is part of the Biodiversity Support Program and is a USAID-funded consortium of WWF, the Nature Conservancy and World Resources Institute.
  • Environmental Research Foundation - This Foundation aims to provide understandable scientific information about human health and the environment
  • Greenpeace (International)
  • International Institute for Sustainable Development - This is a multimedia resource for environmental and development policy-makers.
  • International Rivers Network - IRN supports local communities working to protect their rivers and watersheds. It works to halt destructive river development projects, and to encourage equitable and sustainable methods of meeting needs for water, energy and flood management.
  • Nautilus Institute for Security and Sustainability - The Nautilus Institute at Berkeley is a research and consulting organisation which promotes international cooperation for security and sustainable development. The site has online documents, a jobs page, email news services and a weekly update.
  • National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan Environment Agency
  • The Earth Council - The Earth Council is an international NGO created in 1992 to promote and advance the implementation of the Earth Summit agreements. The site contains details of the various Earth Council projects, the Rio+5 National Consultations and Forum and the Earth Council Strategy.
  • United States Environment Protection Agency - One very interesting aspect of this huge site is the Community-Based Environmental Protection section. There is a resources section, a tools for community-based initiatives section, current information on grants and links to programs and resources for communities. Another aspect of the site is the award-winning 'Envirofacts Warehouse'. It maps environmental data about more than 700,00 sites that handle potentially dangerous chemicals and identifies their harmful substances.
  • World Business Council for Sustainable Development - The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is a coalition of 125 international companies united by a shared commitment to the environment and to the principles of economic growth and sustainable development.
  • World Resources Institute - The World Resources Institute is a publicly-funded educational institution. The site contains a library and a newsroom and has some useful links.
  • Worldwatch Institute - The Worldwatch Institute is a non-government research organisation. The site has access to recent State of the World reports, Worldwatch feature articles and press releases, other publications and email lists.

  • Australasian Disaster and Hazard Research Directory - This research Directory, originally funded by the Australian Committee of the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction and the Australian Emergency Management Institute (AEMI), and undertaken by the staff of the Natural Hazards Research Centre at Macquarie University, provides a view of just what research is going on in the Australia - South Pacific - South-east Asia region and a profile for the region's efforts on the world
  • EnviroNET This is a network of environmental databases incorporating such material as cleaner production strategies, environmental education and waste treatment.
  • Environmental Organisation Webdirectory
  • Global System for Sustainable Development (GSSD) - GSSD is an adaptive knowledge meta-network for use in conjunction with Internet resources to explore innovative responses to sustainability challenges -- at all levels of development and in all parts of the world.
  • Australian Government "Environment Portal"
  • National Library for the Environment - The service includes Congressional Research Service reports, daily news, a population and environment linkages service, laws and treaties, educational programs, jobs and careers, meetings, journals and reference materials. It also includes Briefing Books on Global Climate Change and other issues.
  • Planet Ark - This site provides up-to-date environmentally relevant news and information
  • Sustainability Web Ring - This Internet tool allows users to navigate easily between Web sites that deal with the principles, policies and best practices for sustainable development. By following the links through the web ring, you will find information from around the world on how to deal with such crucial issues as climate change, cleaner production, waste, poverty, consumerism, natural resource management and governance. This site is aimed at decision-makers within civil society, government, business, research and funding institutions, and communities.
