Master of Environmental Management: MEM

Program Duration

MEM - 3 sessions full-time (1.5 years) or 6 sessions part-time (3 years).

We aim to provide as much flexibility as possible in the delivery to suit students’ needs. The mandatory courses are available in distance mode and a number of potential electives are available in distance or short-course mode. In some cases it may be possible to complete the MEM in 12 months by taking short courses in the intersession breaks.

Program Requirements

Students enrolled in the Master of Environmental Management are required to complete a program totalling 72 units of credit. This is made up of:

  • 3 compulsory core courses each of 6 units of credit (= 18 UOC);
  • normally 4 fundamental knowledge courses each of 6 units of credit, but see note * below (= 24 UOC);
  • the remaining units of credit (generally 30UOC) to be taken as electives or a combination of electives and a project.

The program will generally be taken over a minimum of 3 sessions (full-time) or 6 sessions (part-time). In some circumstances it may be completed in 12 months full-time and less than 6 sessions part-time, by taking compressed courses out of the standard two sessions. These will only be available for certain courses. However, a number of relevant post-graduate courses are already available across campus in either short-course or distance mode.

Core courses

  • IEST5001: Frameworks for Environmental Management (to be taken at the start of the Program)
  • IEST5002: Tools for Environmental Management
  • IEST5003: Addressing Environmental Issues (to be taken in the final session of the program)

Each of the core courses is 3 hours per week, and worth 6 units of credit. For more details on the content of these courses, please see the Course Information page in the Current Students section.

Fundamental Knowledge Courses

  • BIOS9001: Fundamental Knowledge in Environmental Management: Ecology
  • CHEM7300: Fundamental Knowledge in Environmental Management: Physical Science
  • CVEN9895: Fundamental Knowledge in Environmental Management: Engineering
  • ECON5125: Fundamental Knowledge in Environmental Management: Economics
  • HPSC5520: Fundamental Knowledge in Environmental Management: Social Science
  • LAWS3439: Fundamental Knowledge in Environmental Management: Law

Each of the core courses is worth 6 units of credit. For more details on the content of these courses, please see the Course Information page in the Current Students section.

To deal with the fact that students will bring very different knowledge bases to the program and may need to fill knowledge gaps in order to achieve basic ‘environmental literacy’, 6 ‘fundamental knowledge’ courses form an important part of the program. Students will be required to take those Fundamental Knowledge courses for which they cannot demonstrate sufficient background.

* Students will normally be required to take 4 fundamental knowledge courses with the 4 selected on the basis of their disciplinary background and experience. The fundamental knowledge courses to be taken will be determined following discussion of academic qualifications and experience with the Program Coordinator.

Where students can demonstrate sufficient disciplinary background or experience they may, with the permission of the Program Coordinator, take fewer than 4 Fundamental Knowledge courses with additional electives in their place. In some cases, students may be required to take more than 4 fundamental knowledge courses if there is a demonstrated need in terms of basic disciplinary knowledge.

Electives

The remainder of units of credit (usually 30UOC) is to be taken are electives, which may be selected from a University-wide list. Choice of electives is through consultation with the Program Coordinator and based on previous experience, needs and timetabling constraints. For more details on the content of these courses, please see the Course Information page in the Current Students section.
