nov 08: Student & Staff Research Seminars a Success
The IES has been conducting a series of informal student and staff research seminars, involving PhD and Post-Doc students presenting overviews of their Environmental Policy and Management Thesis projects to other students and staff for feedback and discussion.
So far in this series presentations have been made by PhD students Jacqui Hicks, Tani Faletau, Crelis Rammelt and Post-Doc student, Maria Retnanestri. The next presentation on Wed 26th November will be by PhD student Alice Bergonia.
"I like these seminars because they keep me up to date with a lot of other issues in the same field, because we're all doing similar yet very different things. The feedback you get is also very constructive" - Tani Faletau, PhD Candidate at the IES.
aug 08: robert nurick appointed senior lecturer & teaching coordinator
Dr. Robert Nurick, co-founder of the not-for-profit organisation Development Focus, has accepted the position of Senior Lecturer and Teaching Coordinator for the Institute.
Dr. Nurick arrived from the UK in August and commenced work immediately, teaching both Economics and Addressing Environmental Issues to our MEM students.
Robert's teaching experience includes lecturing at the School of African and Asian Studies at the University of Sussex in the UK where he developed core courses including The Political Economy of the Environment and Environmental Economics for the School's Masters program 'Environment, Development and Policy'.
Esteemed FATE Project Officer Alex Baumber has left the Institute in his capacity as an employee to start work on a PhD with the IES.
His work as a Project Officer entailed looking at commercial uses for Australian native species that could contribute to conservation goals, including kangaroos in the rangelands and multi-species plantations for bioenergy and other products.
Starting in July 2008, his thesis will look at ways in which bioenergy land-uses can provide incentives to revegetate degraded landscapes. This research will involve studying the environmental policy and management issues affecting potential bioenergy plantations at a case study site west of the Blue Mountains, as well as drawing lessons from other cases where bioenergy has proven to be a driver for deforestation as opposed to revegetation.
The IES wishes Alex all the best with his studies, and looks forward to regular updates! For more information on Alex, please see his profile on the Student Profiles page.
The IES has appointed a new staff member, Sarah Terkes, to take on a variety of roles within the Institute. Sarah's background is in business & events management, information systems and web design and she intends to draw on all her skills to ensure the smooth implementation of all IES operations and to help pave the way to a fresh, dynamic face for the Institute.
Sarah is looking forward to getting to know the students, especially the post graduate research students for whom she will be acting as student coordinator.
Sarah's duties will also comprise the coordination of all public events held by the IES, which include regular lectures and fora on important topical subjects; the management of the Environmental Network portal; graphic web design and maintenance of the IES, FATE and BMWHI websites; research project coordination and report editing; and information and communications management. Her role at the IES will be performed in unison with her long-standing role as Administrator of the Blue Mountains World Heritage Institute.
