Dr. Robert Nurick is a Senior Lecturer at the IES and Teaching Coordinator of the Masters of Environmental Management post graduate coursework programme.
His role comprises program coordination and teaching the ECON5125: Fundamental Knowledge in Environmental Management - Economics course.
Robert has worked in the field of environment, development and community engagement for the last 20 years.
Having completed his PhD at London University researching issues of natural resource management and the household energy sector in northern Ghana, he was awarded a lecturership at the School of African and Asian Studies at the University of Sussex, UK, where he was responsible for developing core courses in the Political Economy of the Environment, Environmental Economics, Environmental Impact Assessment and Cost-Benefit Analysis for the School’s Masters Program ‘Environment, Development and Policy’.
His research interests at Sussex focused on biodiversity issues in Kenya, international trade agreements and impacts on small-scale farmers in the Caribbean, environmental cost-benefit analysis in the power sector, fairtrade programs in West Africa.
Awarded a visiting fellowship at the University of Natal in Durban, Robert conducted a stakeholder analysis mapping out residents’ perspectives and concerns on the environmental impacts of industry on people living in South Durban, developing community-based indicators for monitoring quality of life and impact of industry on local neighbourhoods.
With colleagues Robert has set up a not-for-profit company Development Focus training professionals and community members in public participation and engagement skills. The focus of this work has been to advocate for the inclusion of under-represented individuals and groups within society in decision-making processes that directly impact on their lives.
Examples of this work crosses many sectors from the environment, community cohesion and community safety to education, children and young people in the UK, sub-Saharan Africa, South and South-East Asia and Central America.
Robert’s current research interests include exploring the linkages between environmental and social justice issues.
