Dr. Robert Gale has over twenty five years experience in environmental management, economic development and sustainability.

Robert's background

  • Cross-disciplinary academic research and teaching experience linking biophysical and socio-economic science at the University of New South Wales (Institute of Environmental Studies); and in Canada at Royal Roads University (Environmental Programs; School of Business); and the University of Toronto (Department of Geography).
  • Director of his own business, Ecological Economics Inc., advising a range of clients on economic instruments, environment-economy linkages, environmental issues, and strategy including: Environment Canada; Fisheries and Oceans Canada; International Institute for Sustainable Development; National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy; World Resources Institute; Pollution Probe; and Sierra Club of British Columbia.
  • Manager and Senior Executive Officer of the City of Toronto's Environmental Protection Office leading initiatives on urban sustainability (including development approvals, environmental policy, strategy, education and advocacy); and
  • Managing stakeholder engagement and public consultation processes with the Royal Commission on the Economic Union and Development Prospects for Canada.

  • Environment, development and sustainability: The crisis of modernity
  • Environmental decision making ("sustainability science"; ecological tax reform; responding to the impact of climate change on coastal environments; integrating environmental issues in free trade agreements; ecotourism)
  • Business and sustainability (environmental management accounting and "triple bottom line" reporting)
  • Sustainable development in China
