This section includes general information and details about all four post graduate programs run by the IES.
For information on the courses that make up these programs and the associated timetables, please see the Current Students section.
GENERAL PROGRAM INFORMATION
The Master of Environmental Management (MEM) is our most popular program. It is built upon a solid foundation of core and fundamental knowledge courses which provide students with the basis for the critical appreciation of environmental management frameworks and 'environmental literacy' in key disciplinary areas.
Environmental literacy is vital in the environmental management field which involves collaborative decision-making by specialists from many disciplines and for this process to be effective mutual understanding of others’ perspectives is critical.
Core courses provide students with appreciation of the multi-disciplinary nature of environmental management and group work experience in addressing issues collaboratively with colleagues from a range of disciplinary backgrounds.
Beyond this foundation, students are free to design a program to suit their specific needs (within any set pre-requisite constraints). The IES Program Co-ordinator will assist you in designing a balanced program plan.
Students not wanting to proceed to the full Masters qualification may take out a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Environmental Management provided they complete the sequence of courses prescribed.
Students who lack the qualifications for entry to the MEM, may, in circumstances as specified, use progress through the Graduate Certificate to gain entry into the Graduate Diploma and Masters programs.
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Research Masters in Environmental Policy and Management is our most advanced post graduate program, respected for its innovative and significant research initiatives with beneficial, practicable results.
WHO ARE THEY DESIGNED FOR?
The Master of Environmental Management and the associated Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma are designed for people from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds and career stages. You may:
- be working in the environment field and wish to update your skills and knowledge
- be looking for a career change into the area of environmental management
- be a recent graduate wanting to establish a career in environmental management
- simply desire a better understanding of environmental management issues
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Research Masters in Environmental Policy and Management program is designed for future environmental policy makers to gain experience conducting research in their chosen field under the expert supervision and tutelage of Dr John Merson, Director of the Institute of Environmental Studies.
How to apply
There are two methods you may use to apply for our programs
1) Contact us to request an application form or download from here:
Application form for local students | Application for international students
2) Apply online through http://www.my.unsw.edu.au
After you fill in the form you will be sent an email informing you that your application has been received and requesting any documents that you need to send in - academic transcripts, proof of english ability, etc. Any copies that you send in to UNSW must be certified.
Enrolment
The enrolment process involves several steps:
1) Application: please see the How to Apply section directly above.
2) Offer: if your application is successful, you will be issued a letter of offer. This will include instructions on how to accept your offer online.
3) Acceptance: you must accept your offer online. Sending a paper acceptance to admissions is no longer sufficient.
To do this, follow the instructions on your letter of offer. The link is http://www.my.unsw.edu.au
4) Interview: before you can enrol, you will be invited to attend an informal interview with Dr John Merson, Director of the Institute of Environmental Studies. He will discuss with you the direction in which you would like to take the program, and guide you in your course choice.
An administrative officer from the IES will contact you prior to the beginning of semester to organise an interview. If you haven't received an email or phone call please contact the IES on (61 2) 9385 5687 or ies@unsw.edu.au
5) Enrolment: immediately after your interview, once you have chosen your courses, an Administrative Officer will be able to enrol you. Throughout your program with the IES we will always enrol you in your courses.
6) Collection of Unipass and Student Card: once you have been enrolled you will need to collect your Unipass and your Student Card. These are both necessary items.
You collect your Unipass from DIS><CONNECT (the IT Service Desk Counter), which is located on the ground floor of the Library.
You collect your Student Card from E-Spot, in the Red Centre.
7) Saturday Workshop: the IES runs this introductory session for new students on the first Saturday of Sessions 1 and 2. Attendance is not compulsory but recommended. It includes lunch and is a great way to get to know your fellow students and the academic staff at the IES. In this workshop you will discuss the learning method, referencing and research, and you will also be introduced to the UNSW Library system.
Fees 2010
Two programs run by the IES - the MEM and Grad Dip - are CSP (Commonwealth Supported Place) programs. This means that if you are eligible for CSP, the cost per course will be significantly reduced. CSP permits local students who meet citizenship and residency requirements and have sufficient available SLE (Student Learning Entitlement) to substitute a CSP liability for tuition fees. A CSP liability can either be deferred (for Australian Citizens and Permanent Residents on a Humanitarian Visa) and collected through the taxation system by the Australian Taxation Office or paid up-front to the University, thereby attracting a 20% discount. Permanent Residents (other than those on a Humanitarian Visa) are not entitled to the 20% discount and are required to pay up-front.
Please note: international students and local Grad Cert students are not entitled to CSP.
For more information on Fees, CSP, HECS-HELP and FEE-HELP, please see the Fees section on the MyUNSW website.
