Program Duration
1 session full-time (0.5 years) or 2 sessions part-time (1 year).
Program Requirements
Students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Environmental Management are required to complete a program totalling 24 units of credit (UOC). This comprises:
- 1 compulsory core course worth 6 units of credit = 6 UOC
- 2 fundamental knowledge courses worth 6 units of credit each = 12 UOC
- the remaining 6 units of credit to be taken as an elective OR the second core course IEST5002 OR another fundamental knowledge course.
This program is designed to provide an introduction to the frameworks (especially sustainability), tools and basic disciplinary knowledge relevant to environmental management. It is fully articulated with the Graduate Diploma and Master of Environmental Management.
The mandatory courses are available in distance mode and a number of potential electives are available in distance or short-course mode.
Compulsory core course
IEST5001: Frameworks for Environmental Management
This core course takes 3 hours per week and is worth 6 units of credit. It is to be taken at the start of the program. For more details on the content of this course, please see the Core Course information page.
Fundamental Knowledge Courses
BIOS9001: Fundamental Knowledge in Environmental Management: Ecology
CHEM7300: Fundamental Knowledge in Environmental Management: Physical Science
CVEN9895: Fundamental Knowledge in Environmental Management: Engineering
ECON5125: Fundamental Knowledge in Environmental Management: Economics
HPSC5520: Fundamental Knowledge in Environmental Management: Social Science
LAWS3439: Fundamental Knowledge in Environmental Management: Law
Each of the fundamental knowledge courses is worth 6 units of credit. For more details on the content of these courses, please see the FK Course information page.
To ensure the achievement of basic environmental literacy students are required to choose Fundamental Knowledge courses for which they cannot demonstrate sufficient experience.
Students will be required to take 2 fundamental knowledge courses, selected on the basis of their disciplinary background and experience. The fundamental knowledge courses to be taken will be determined following discussion of academic qualifications and experience with the Program Coordinator.
The remaining 6 Units Of Credit
The remaining units of credit (usually 6UOC) may be taken as an elective, which may be selected from a University-wide list. Choice of electives is through consultation with the Program Coordinator and based on previous experience, needs and timetabling constraints. For more details on the content of these courses, please see the Electives information page.
Otherwise the remaining 6 UOC may be taken as the second core course IEST5002 or another Fundamental Knowledge course, selected from the above list.

Articulation Rules
Candidates who gained entry to the GradCert via a completed undergraduate degree and have been approved to upgrade to the GradDip or Masters may carry 24 units of credit from the GradCert to the GradDip or Masters, provided the lower award has not been taken out.
Candidates who gained entry to the GradCert using relevant work experience in lieu of a completed undergraduate degree and are seeking entry to the GradDip or Masters via credit-level performance in the GradCert (all 4 courses must be completed before applying for an upgrade) may only carry 12 units of credit to the GradDip or Masters program provided that the lower award has not been taken out.
Where a GradCert has been awarded and students wish to enrol at the next level (the GradDip or the Masters), the Committee will determine the courses already completed which may be credited to the new Program. Note that these may not be fully credited to the new program.
