Program Duration
3 sessions full-time (1.5 years) or 6 sessions part-time (3 years).
The IES aims to provide as much flexibility as possible in the delivery of the MEM program. The mandatory courses are available in distance mode and a number of potential electives are available in distance or short-course mode. In some cases it may be possible to complete the MEM in 12 months by taking short courses in session breaks.
Program Requirements
Students enrolled in the Master of Environmental Management are required to complete a program totalling 72 units of credit (UOC). This comprises:
- 3 compulsory core courses each of 6 units of credit = 18 UOC
- 4 fundamental knowledge courses each of 6 units of credit = 24 UOC
- 30UOC to be taken as electives or a combination of electives plus a project.
The program is usually taken over a minimum of 3 sessions (full-time) or 6 sessions (part-time). In some circumstances it may be completed in 12 months full-time and less than 6 sessions part-time by taking compressed courses out of the standard two sessions.
COMPULSORY Core courses
IEST5001: Frameworks for Environmental Management (taken in the first session)
IEST5002: Tools for Environmental Management
IEST5003: Addressing Environmental Issues (taken in the final session)
Each of the core courses takes 3 hours per week and is worth 6 units of credit. For more details on the content of these courses, please see the Core Course information page.
Fundamental Knowledge Courses
Students are required to take 4 fundamental knowledge courses, selected on the basis of their individual disciplinary background and experience. The course choices will be determined following discussion of academic qualifications and experience with the Program Coordinator. The courses available are:
BIOS9001: Fundamental Knowledge in Environmental Management: Ecology
CHEM7300: Fundamental Knowledge in Environmental Management: Physical Science
CVEN9895: Fundamental Knowledge in Environmental Management: Engineering
ECON5125: Fundamental Knowledge in Environmental Management: Economics
HPSC5520: Fundamental Knowledge in Environmental Management: Social Science
LAWS3439: Fundamental Knowledge in Environmental Management: Law
Each of the fundamental knowledge courses is worth 6 units of credit. For more details on the content of these courses, please see the FK Course information page.
To ensure the achievement of basic environmental literacy students are required to choose Fundamental Knowledge courses for which they cannot demonstrate sufficient experience.
Where students can demonstrate sufficient disciplinary background or experience they may, with the permission of the Program Coordinator, take fewer than 4 Fundamental Knowledge courses with additional electives in their place. In some cases, students may be required to take more than 4 fundamental knowledge courses if there is a demonstrated need in terms of basic disciplinary knowledge.
Electives
The remaining units of credit (usually 30UOC) are to be taken as electives, which may be selected from a University-wide list. Choice of electives is through consultation with the Program Coordinator and based on previous experience, needs and timetabling constraints. For more details on the content of these courses, please see the Electives information page.
Admission Requirements
Candidates for the MEM should have an appropriate Bachelor degree from the University of New South Wales or a qualification considered equivalent from another university or tertiary institution at a level acceptable to the Admissions and Progression Sub-Committee (hereafter referred to as the Committee) of the Management Committee for the MEM. Performance in the undergraduate degree and/or relevant experience will be taken into account in granting admission.
Candidates not holding an approved Bachelor’s degree but who are admitted to the Graduate Certificate in Environmental Management and who complete the four courses comprising the Certificate at the first attempt, at a minimum of credit average, may apply to upgrade their enrolment to the Masters and to be given advanced standing for 2 of the courses completed for the GradCert.
In exceptional cases an applicant who submits evidence of such other academic or professional qualifications and/or relevant experience, as may be approved by the Committee, may be permitted to enrol for the degree.
If the Committee is not satisfied with an applicant’s qualifications and/or relevant experience the Committee may require the applicant to undergo such assessment or carry out such work as the Committee may prescribe, before permitting enrolment.
Articulation Rules
Candidates who gained entry to the GradCert via a completed undergraduate degree and have been approved to upgrade to the Masters may carry 24 units of credit from the GradCert to Masters, provided the lower award has not been taken out.
Candidates who gained entry to the GradCert using relevant work experience in lieu of a completed undergraduate degree and are seeking entry to the Masters via credit-level performance in the GradCert (all 4 courses must be completed before applying for an upgrade) may only carry 12 units of credit to the Masters program provided that the lower award has not been taken out.
Candidates may carry 48 units of credit from the GradDip to the Masters, provided the lower award has not been taken out.
Where a GradCert or GradDip has been awarded and students wish to enrol at the next level (the GradDip or the Masters), the Committee will determine the courses already completed which may be credited to the new Program. Note that these may not be fully credited to the new program.
