This interdisciplinary research program allows students from a wide range of disciplines to undertake a Research Masters or PhD in Environmental Policy and Management.
The program is administered through the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and managed by the Institute of Environmental Studies in the Faculty of Science.
WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THIS research PROGRAM?
This Research Masters / PhD program addresses the critical environmental issues facing the global community today. It provides graduate research students with the opportunity to acquire the interdisciplinary policy and management skills needed to address complex environmental and natural resource problems, as well as the opportunity to carry out research in conjunction with the agencies responsible for managing and implementing environmental policy.
THE RESEARCH MASTERS PROGRAM
The Masters program requires students to take a one semester course focusing thesis development and depending on prior knowledge, two other courses selected from environmental masters courses across a range of schools and faculties. Course selection will be undertaken in consultation with the Program Coordinator.
Research Masters students will also be required to undertake a research thesis of 30,000 to 35,000 words, to be supervised by a relevant faculty specialist. Masters student can convert to a PhD after one year on condition of exceptional performance.
THE PHD PROGRAM
Given the interdisciplinary nature of this research program, PhD students will be able to draw their thesis topic from a wide range of areas, and joint-supervision by academic staff from other faculties is encouraged.
They can also undertake a thesis in association with the work of the Institute's partner research agencies, Tthe Future of Australia's Threatened Ecosystems (FATE) program, and the Blue Mountains World Heritage Institute (BMWHI).
All supervision is coordinated through UNSW, with the option of accessing researchers from other universities and relevant agencies for co-supervision if needed. Primary supervisors will be drawn from a range of specialists in different disciplines relating to environmental and natural resource management.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE GAINED
Students will develop:
- An understanding of environmental issues
- The conceptual and practical tools necessary for the management of natural resources
- Problem solving skills
- Ccritical thinking skills to enable them to:
- address complex or 'tricky' problems; and
- analyse and articulate the economic, scientific and social processes involved in environmental policy and management
